The Moral of the Story In Horse Training&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Trainer Andy Curry writes about horse training, JJ Rydberg and a few other things here:<\/p>\n<p>This incredible story reminds of an important horse training principle.<\/p>\n<p>His name was Donald Morehouse.<\/p>\n<p>While in combat in the Korean War, he was shot 7 times.<\/p>\n<p>But 6 rounds never made it into his body due to a bullet proof vest.<\/p>\n<p>But one bullet pierced him.<\/p>\n<p>It went through his left shoulder and lodged in his right side.<\/p>\n<p>Wounded, Morehouse hiked to a M.A.S.H. unit to get the bullet removed.<\/p>\n<p>48 years later, Morehouse had heart bypass surgery.\u00a0 That was in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors found a shocking discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Calcified scars showed that the .29 caliber bullet removed from his side in 1953 actually&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Passed through his heart!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Doctors said most people would&#8217;ve died within minutes of the wound.<\/p>\n<p>Morehouse walked 3 miles and lived.<\/p>\n<p>The reason this has an important connection with horse training is because you often don&#8217;t know just how lucky you were.<\/p>\n<p>Morehouse probably thought he was lucky to be alive back in 1953 &#8211; but I&#8217;ll bet after the heart surgery, the surprising news really hit home.<\/p>\n<p>But with horses, we often don&#8217;t know how lucky we have it while working with them.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because horses are typically very forgiving and can put up with a lot of nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>But like us humans, they have their limit.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s their limit you want to be careful of going past.<\/p>\n<p>My friend and fellow trainer J.J. Rydberg has a great saying.\u00a0 He says:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re mad, the horse is already mad!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why does this matter?<\/p>\n<p>First, you can&#8217;t fight the horse.<\/p>\n<p>You will not win.<\/p>\n<p>And if you have a battle going, then you don&#8217;t want to lose it because you&#8217;ll teach your horse he can do what HE wants.<\/p>\n<p>So the trick is, don&#8217;t get in a battle in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, here&#8217;s some things to think about.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re working with your horse be aware of signs that he&#8217;s getting unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>Tail swishing.<\/p>\n<p>Pawing.<\/p>\n<p>Head bobbing up and down in a quick motion.<\/p>\n<p>Tight lips.<\/p>\n<p>Ears layin&#8217; back.<\/p>\n<p>Teeth grinding.<\/p>\n<p>Tight body.<\/p>\n<p>And so on.<\/p>\n<p>Will your horse show all these signs?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;ll likely show some of them if he&#8217;s gettin&#8217; unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>As you work with him and you see one of the signs, just make a mental note to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>You know that what you&#8217;re doing has started to irritate him.<\/p>\n<p>Should you stop there?<\/p>\n<p>Not necessarily.<\/p>\n<p>You can keep trying, but be aware of his emotional state.<\/p>\n<p>If you get the same signs and they&#8217;re more frequent and closer together, then do what J.J. recommends.<\/p>\n<p>Back off.<\/p>\n<p>Let him have control and feel good.<\/p>\n<p>Walk him around.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re riding him, ride with loose reins for a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Cuz it don&#8217;t feel good to get tugged on all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Would you like it?<\/p>\n<p>Heck, he may just be a horse but he doesn&#8217;t like what&#8217;s going on.<\/p>\n<p>And if you&#8217;re working from the ground, just lead him around a little.\u00a0 Do some things he already knows and bring his confidence back.<\/p>\n<p>Before you go back to trying what you were doing, check his emotional state.\u00a0 If he&#8217;s good, then try it again.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that you may not get the response you want.\u00a0 You may only get a try.\u00a0 And you may have to live with that for the day.<\/p>\n<p>And as I&#8217;ve said before, that&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no reason to get in a hurry, right?<\/p>\n<p>After all, if you do, it&#8217;ll put you way behind.<\/p>\n<p>Just remember that.<\/p>\n<p>Getting in a hurry will put you way behind.<\/p>\n<p>But going slow will get you the fastest<br \/>\nresults.<\/p>\n<p>And this is the wisdom of J.J.
