\u00a0How overwhelming it must be.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, when we want our horse to move in<br \/>\nthe round pen we only need to motivate him just<br \/>\nenough to get him to move.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it, that\u2019s all, no more.<\/p>\n<p>By doing more than that, the horse starts<br \/>\ndesperately trying to figure out what you want.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not until the pressure of the motivation<br \/>\ndisappears that he begins to understand.<\/p>\n<p>[Remember my previous emails about pressure &#8211;<br \/>\nrelease? \u00a0It comes into play here a lot.]<\/p>\n<p>Thus, if he\u2019s bein\u2019 chased in the round<br \/>\npen with a pole and plastic bag and the person<br \/>\nchasing him doesn\u2019t back off the pressure to signal<br \/>\nto the horse he\u2019s doin\u2019 what he wants, the horse<br \/>\ncan panic, become confused, and may even attack.<\/p>\n<p>Another important one is horses are<br \/>\nmotivated by comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Horses have a lazy nature. \u00a0They instinctively<br \/>\nknow it\u2019s not in their interest to run, run, run.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s comfortable is safety and relaxed<br \/>\nwalking or standing.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026for example\u2026if you\u2019re trying to<br \/>\nget your horse in a trailer and you\u2019re having<br \/>\ntrouble, one way to talk him into it is work him<br \/>\noutside of the trailer.<\/p>\n<p>And once he gets in the trailer, he<br \/>\ngets petted. \u00a0He can eat a little. \u00a0He gets<br \/>\nbrushed and so on.<\/p>\n<p>The trick is to associate \u201ccomfort\u201d<br \/>\nwith being in the trailer because horses are<br \/>\nmotivated by comfort.<\/p>\n<p>If you really think about it, there\u2019s<br \/>\na lot implications to what motivates horses.<\/p>\n<p>When you work with a horse, keep this<br \/>\nfirst secret in mind. \u00a0Knowing what motivates<br \/>\na horse to do something is immensely valuable<br \/>\nwhen teaching him things.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll have a couple more secrets like this for<br \/>\nyou in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>OK? \u00a0Go work with your horses \u2013 but please do it safely!<\/p>\n<p>Charlie<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
