where<br \/>\na handshake is much more valuable than<br \/>\nany contract all those New York lawyers could<br \/>\ndraft to protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>I have done business with multiple firms over<br \/>\nthe last 40 years amounting to over hundreds of<br \/>\nthousands of dollars on a handshake.\u00a0 It was<br \/>\nall based on mutual trust and to deliver on<br \/>\na promise &#8211; from BOTH sides of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>I have never been burned nor have I ever<br \/>\nfailed at delivering on those promises.<\/p>\n<p>We work hard here on building our reputation and<br \/>\nproviding good products in return for a fair<br \/>\nprice.\u00a0 If something isn&#8217;t right, we make it<br \/>\nright.<\/p>\n<p>So, as you look around and wonder who you are<br \/>\ndoing business with, please know we not only<br \/>\nhighly value you as a customer but we&#8217;ll back<br \/>\nup what we sell and deliver.<\/p>\n<p>To us that seems like it shouldn&#8217;t need to be<br \/>\nsaid &#8211; you MUST be able to take control of him.<\/p>\n<p>A while back one frightful rider<br \/>\nemailed me and said,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grabbed both reins and pulled, and pulled<br \/>\nbut he just went faster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason for that.<\/p>\n<p>Horses are built longitudinal.<\/p>\n<p>They are built to move forward.\u00a0 With<br \/>\ntheir bodies built like they are, they can<br \/>\ndrag and pull lots of weight.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve likely seen rodeos and have seen<br \/>\nhorses drag cows around.\u00a0 They are built to have<br \/>\nthat kind of power.<\/p>\n<p>Even when you are pulling on the reins<br \/>\nand engaging the bit!\u00a0 When they&#8217;re spooked<br \/>\nor have a sense to take off, you&#8217;re not in<br \/>\ncontrol if all you do is pull the reins back.<\/p>\n<p>When the horse is bolting, they&#8217;re moving<br \/>\nforward to get away.\u00a0 Pulling and tugging and<br \/>\nyanking on the reins typically only makes it worse.<\/p>\n<p>So whaddya do?<\/p>\n<p>Use the one rein stop.\u00a0 It pulls the horse&#8217;s<br \/>\nhead sideways.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to run like that<br \/>\n(although some horses do).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the emergency brake that works.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a good stopper of bucking, rearing,<br \/>\nand bolting horses.<\/p>\n<p>But you MUST do right!\u00a0 Trying the one rein<br \/>\nstop on a bolting horse at the wrong time<br \/>\ncould cause to flip over.\u00a0 With you on him.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s kinda hard to describe how to do it<br \/>\nbut I&#8217;ll try.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing you do is get your horse<br \/>\nflexing from the neck in your ground work.<\/p>\n<p>When he&#8217;s good at that, then do it from<br \/>\nthe saddle&#8230;preferably using a rope halter and<br \/>\nlead rope.<\/p>\n<p>Tie the lead rope to loop of the halter.<\/p>\n<p>The lead rope is now your reins (actually&#8230;rein)<br \/>\nconnected to the halter loop underneath the horse&#8217;s<br \/>\nchin.\u00a0 The halter now acts like a hackamore.<\/p>\n<p>Next, pull the lead rope up to your shoulder,<br \/>\nslide your left hand down the lead rope, grab it and<br \/>\npull it to your thigh just above your knee and hold<br \/>\nit there.<\/p>\n<p>When your horse gives to that position<br \/>\n(you&#8217;ll see slack in the rope)<br \/>\nthen let it go and pet him and encourage him.<\/p>\n<p>Do both sides.\u00a0 Get your horse so used to this<br \/>\nthat when you ask for it it&#8217;s as automatic as breathing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember to do <em>BOTH<\/em> sides of the horse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then put him in the round pen and walk him<br \/>\naround.\u00a0 Practice pulling that head over to one side<br \/>\nto stop him.<\/p>\n<p>You DO NOT let go until he stops moving.\u00a0 That<br \/>\nteaches him he can have his head back when he stops<br \/>\nmoving.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to do both sides.<\/p>\n<p>Then work on it in a trot and canter.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll take a while to get it down but it<br \/>\ncan, does, and may save your life.<\/p>\n<p>After all, it only takes one simple little thing<br \/>\nto set off a horse and he could suddenly explode outta<br \/>\ncontrol and a one-rein stop can save your life.<\/p>\n<p>Just the thought of fence posts whizzing by while<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re on the back of an out of control horse kinda makes<br \/>\nyou want to get good at the one rein stop&#8230;doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Paul Esh really describes and demonstrates<br \/>\nall this really well in his<strong> &#8220;One Rein Stop&#8221;
