Wasted Fear with Horses&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a very emportant horse topic<br \/>\nyou need to understand.<\/p>\n<p>And that is&#8230;teaching your horse to<br \/>\nconquer his fear of those horse eating monsters.<\/p>\n<p>One thing you gotta understand is this.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just the horse that needs the<br \/>\nhelp &#8211; it&#8217;s also his rider.<\/p>\n<p>After all, a rider who&#8217;s not confident<br \/>\ncan unwittingly encourage a horse to escalate<br \/>\nhis fear.<\/p>\n<p>Then a wreck is sure to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Part of helping a horse overcome these<br \/>\nfears is also YOU overcoming yours.<\/p>\n<p>It goes like this.<\/p>\n<p>You have the brains.<\/p>\n<p>Your horse has the brawn.<\/p>\n<p>You have reasoning power.<\/p>\n<p>Your horse does not &#8211; he reacts and<br \/>\nresponds.<\/p>\n<p>He doesn&#8217;t think like you and I.<\/p>\n<p>Where you and I see a plastic bag rolling<br \/>\nacross the prairie&#8230;he instantly thinks &#8220;THREAT&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to get a little miffed when the<br \/>\nhorse gets scared at these seemingly harmless<br \/>\nthings.<\/p>\n<p>But, isn&#8217;t it fair that the horse can<br \/>\nget scared?<\/p>\n<p>You get scared at things you don&#8217;t<br \/>\nunderstand, right?<\/p>\n<p>So do I.<\/p>\n<p>But therein lies the key.<\/p>\n<p>And that is this.<\/p>\n<p>You, me, and the horse get scared at things<br \/>\nwe don&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Once we understand it, it doesn&#8217;t have the<br \/>\npower over us it once did.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great story about a little boy<br \/>\nwho used to walk home from school every day.<\/p>\n<p>But there was a problem he had.<\/p>\n<p>There was a house he had to pass by every<br \/>\nday to go to school and get home.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was that house was home to<br \/>\na dog that would bark, snarl, and run after the<br \/>\nlittle boy every time he passed by the house.<\/p>\n<p>Day after day the boy would sweat bullets<br \/>\nknowing he&#8217;d have to pass the house at a dead run<br \/>\nto avoid getting bitten.<\/p>\n<p>One day he decided he&#8217;d had enough.\u00a0 He<br \/>\nwas sick of running all the time.<\/p>\n<p>This time&#8230;today&#8230;he was going to face<br \/>\nthe dog.<\/p>\n<p>No more running.<\/p>\n<p>As he approached the house, his heart rate<br \/>\nincreased.\u00a0 He was feeling the fear.<\/p>\n<p>He started walking past the house.<\/p>\n<p>He could hear that dog coming.<\/p>\n<p>He started to run but then remembered today<br \/>\nhe was going to face the dog.<\/p>\n<p>He took a deep breath and turned around to<br \/>\nface the dog.<\/p>\n<p>The dog stopped dead in his tracks and barked<br \/>\nat the boy like a crazed arsonist.<\/p>\n<p>Then the little boy noticed something<br \/>\nastonishing.<\/p>\n<p>The dog had no teeth.<\/p>\n<p>That dog couldn&#8217;t have punctured a balloon.<\/p>\n<p>The boy realized that all this time he was<br \/>\nscared of something that could not have hurt him.<\/p>\n<p>In a way, that&#8217;s how you want your horse<br \/>\nto understand the spooky objects.<\/p>\n<p>We want him to understand they have no<br \/>\nteeth either and that they won&#8217;t harm him.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s up to you to lead him and get him<br \/>\nunderstanding this.<\/p>\n<p>Will you ever get him fearless of everything?<\/p>\n<p>Likely not.<\/p>\n<p>But you stay safest when he&#8217;s looking to you<br \/>\nfor help and guidance and work with him to make him<br \/>\ncalmer and calmer.<\/p>\n<p>That means you have to step up.<\/p>\n<p>That means you have to boost your confidence<br \/>\ntoo.<\/p>\n<p>That means when he freaks out that you can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>You have to take control and get him back<br \/>\nto you.<\/p>\n<p>You can learn a great deal of how to do this<br \/>\nwith your horse if you work him through an obstacle<br \/>\ncourse.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve said past emails, Vickie<br \/>\nWeigel set one up for us to film a while back.<\/p>\n<p>I described how she starts with<br \/>\npoles and moves them closer together<br \/>\nas the horse gets more comfortable with them.<\/p>\n<p>As the poles move closer together, your horse<br \/>\nhas to look where to put his feet.<\/p>\n<p>And remember this.<\/p>\n<p>When the poles are closer together, he sees<br \/>\none obstacle &#8211;
