1. Training Lions or Horses — Which Is More Dangerous?

[I pulled this article from the new book “Horse Training Wisdom”]

A while back one of our featured trainers, Paul Esh, was
talking about various kinds of animal training.  Paul said
he knew a man who was an animal trainer in a circus.

One day when he and Paul were talking, the circus trainer
was explaining training for lions, tigers, chimps, elephants,
and horses.

Of all the animals he trained, care to guess which ones he
claimed were most dangerous?

If you said lions or tigers…you’d be wrong.

The answer is horses.
Strange, huh?

The circus trainer said the reason is because it’s easy
to be off your guard with horses.  You can get a horse
to be gentle, calm, and responsive but all of a sudden,
before you know it, you could be stamped on and trampled
like a bug without warning.

As you know, horses have lightning fast reflexes

As Jim Rea (another one of our professional trainers)
points out in his video, think of the fastest boxer you
know and then imagine your horse’s reflexes 5 times
faster than that.

That, my friend, is dangerous if mishandled.

Anyway, the circus trainer also said the reason lions and
tigers aren’t as dangerous is because you “NEVER” take
your eyes off them and you are “ALWAYS” on your guard.

Yeah, they are very dangerous. But you’re on high alert constantly.

With horses, it’s easy to slip into complacency.

Now with that said, I’m sure you now understand the
importance of keeping a horse in its own space.

Never, ever, let a horse crowd into your space.

You go into its space…but it DOES NOT come into yours!

People ask me if it’s okay to invite the horse into their space.
I can live with that as long as safety is strictly observed.

As an example, say you’re standing next to a small shed
with the horse between you and the shed.  That’s not really
a good place for you to be.

What if the horse spooks at something? What if someone
unexpectedly walks out of the shed and spooks the horse?
The horse will no doubt try to desperately get away from
the shed.  And if you’re in the way…

“Ouch!”

Anyway, the best plan is to always have the horse in his
space at all times.  Horses are big and unpredictable.

Like kids and dogs, horses should have manners.

Hopefully your horse has them or you are teaching him some.
If you’re not…you need to be. Otherwise, you’re playing
with dynamite.

But if you’re not teaching him because you don’t know what
to do, then I urge you to look at Paul Esh’s video (DVD)
on teaching a horse to respect your space.

Tip: Go to the following website address to read more
about what Paul Esh can show you:

Your goal is to create a safe environment for you and
your horse. Paul will show you how to do it.  More than
anything, remember not to get complacent. Always think
about where to stand around your horse that’s safe.

And, if he gets into your space, DO NOT ALLOW IT!

wisdom that is invaluable.

I will eventually have a printed book.  However, for
this initial release, I’m going to offer it as a download only.

Here’s a nice note I got from Hannah:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

“Dear Charlie,

Sometimes horse training can be discouraging.  I start
praying, “Lord, show me what I’m doing wrong in my
training or what I need to do.”

Then I read one of the e-mails you’ve sent and it
is exactly what I needed–an answer to prayer.  Just
something really simple, but really important!

Thank you so much for the helpful training tips!
Also thanks for the free download to The Basic Horse
Training Guide.  It’s nice to have a list of the
things your horse needs to accomplish to make a
great riding partner.

In Christ,
Hannah K.
From Iowa”
