1. Horse Training Solutions You May Never Forget
Here’s Andy Curry discussing teaching your horse…
When you learn to teach your horse
something, it can easily go wrong.
You could watch a DVD 5 or 6 times,
learn how to position your hands, legs, and body.
And still…nada!
I’ll be the first to admit I’ve had
people complain that a horse training technique didn’t
work for whatever reason.
From leading to trailer loading to
getting the right lead – people just some- times have trouble.
Why is that?
I have theories about it.
One is they didn’t do it long enough
to give it a chance.
I don’t remember who it was, but one
of my subscribers couldn’t get her horse
loaded after watching my DVD.
I finally figured out that she gave up too soon.
Plus, being novice made it harder for
her to see the nuances and make adjustments here and there.
I told her, “Plan an afternoon. Make
up your mind that you’re going to spend as
long as it takes to get your horse in that trailer.”
She ‘was’ giving up after an hour.
When she planned an afternoon, she did it in about 90
minutes or so. Last I heard, she’s not had a problem since.
Plus, imagine the feeling of achievement!
And you can imagine what she learned by just keeping at it.
In fact, I’d bet if she kept working with horses not wanting to
get in the trailer, she’d be getting them in sooner than most people.
Funny thing is she was just minutes away from being successful.
She was doing what she was supposed to do but just giving up too soon.
That’s how it often is you know. It’s easy to give up because
of frustration – yet the door to success might’ve been
the next one you opened.
Theory #2: Not knowing what your horse may be thinking.
Here’s an example.
In Sam Burrell’s DVD, he shows you how
to install and Operating System in your horse (and yourself).
He shows you how to get control of the
shoulders, hips, neck, feet…everything.
(Which you must have no matter what kind of riding you do.)
And then he shows you something that
may shock you.
He has a section in his DVD about the
problems you may encounter when teaching it.
Here’s a for instance.
At some point you’re going to move your horse’s hindquarters.
But when you do, he wants to go forward.
Yet, here you are tryin’ to get his butt movin’ over.
After all, aren’t you doing it just like the DVD said?
It’s likely you are!
What you didn’t know (until Sam pointed out the problem
you ‘may’ have) is the horse may not be advanced enough
yet to understand that a leg does not always mean go forward.
So how would you solve it?
Any guesses?
Solution: Do it at a fence and move his hip
over with his nose pointed at
a post.

Now here’s the cool part.
Be glad…no…be ELATED! you had that problem.
Why?
Because you’ll NEVER forget it.
Now that solution will stay tucked away in the deep recesses of
your brain ready to use in case you run across the same or similar problem.
Perhaps a friend will one day say to you, “My dang horse always wants
to go forward when I put a leg on his hip. What do I do?”
Then you just smile and tell ’em, ‘Next time you want to
ride him, call me. I’ll come out and show you what to do.’
Can you feel that confidence?
Confidence isn’t illusive.
Confidence comes from workin’ at it and workin’ at and workin’ at it.
Not giving up.
Being glad it’s not working so that when you
finally figure out what’s wrong…
‘You have a solution
you will never forget!’

2. “…I enjoy your newsletters and the good advice.”
Here’s a note from Cindy a while back:
“Charlie,
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your newsletters and the
good advice. I am really enjoying my horse training book and since I haven’t
had a horse for 20 yrs. It’s amazing to me how much I have forgotten!
But now that i am back in the saddle again it makes me feel like a kid again.
Maybe the golden yrs. won’t be so bad after all! Anytime I have a problem
I get my book out and read. Then I say to myself —that’s right —
that’s how to take care of that problem!
I’ll go for now. I could talk about my horse all night. He’s just a grade
gelding but to me he is worth a million!
Keep up the good work you do–it is much appreciated!!!
Happy trails Cindy”
[thanks for the note, Cindy!]
