“How To Get Your Horse Doing What You Want
Even When You Don’t Know How”
When I tell people you don’t “necessarily”
have to know horse training techniques…
“They scoff”
“Get real”…some of ’em say.
“You aren’t serious!??”,…others ask.
But…
“I’m totally serious!”
Sound crazy?
Think about this.
When you first started driving, did
you know how to do it?
No.
Did you have an idea?
Kind of.
Did you get better at it the more you
did it?
Hopefully. 🙂
You see, I’ve found that just about
anything you wanna do bad enough, you can do
even if you know nothing about it.
After all, all great things have
humble beginnings.
Nearly every trainer I’ve talked with
agrees with me on this point – which is this:
“Understand your horse’s nature and
you can get him to do about anything.”
Now…does that mean it doesn’t matter
if you know techniques?
That’s not what I said.
Knowing techniques “does” matter.
And you should always be adding
to your bag of tricks.
Techniques are invaluable to get a horse
to do something.
But what good is a technique if you
don’t know “WHY” it works?
A technique may work for a particular
instance but not for other instances.
The reason may be because of the “reason”
the technique works.
Here’s an example.
Say a horse bites at you.
Unless you understand your horse, you
may knock him in the head for doin’ it.
Sure it felt good to vindicate yourself
because he hurt you.
But you’re likely gonna make him head shy
if you knock him in the face much more.
Why?
Because when he sees your hand coming
towards his face, he’ll think he’s going to get
hit in the face.
That means, he’ll move his head away
from you.
Thus, when you go to pet him, perhaps
bridle or halter him…he won’t let you because
he thinks you’re gonna smack him.
Knowing that about horses, then you’re
not gonna smack him on the face.
But there are times you “may” have to
“spank” your horse and times you shouldn’t.
Understanding your horse’s nature will
help you understand what’s appropriate.
So what’s my point?
In his video, J.J. Rydberg says:
“Keep piddlin’ with your horse
to get him to do what you want.”
What J.J. means is to just keep at it.
When you get a try, call that a success
for the day and put him up until tomorrow.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact,
perfect doesn’t come without repetition. Even
then, perfection isn’t going to happen.
You always work towards it, but you won’t
likely get perfection.
Just because you don’t know how to get
your horse doing something doesn’t mean you can’t.
After all, how do you think the techniques
passed along these hundreds (thousands?) of years
came about?
Horse’s never came with an Owner’s Manuals.
The horse trainers understood their horses
and from that understanding they were able to think
through what works and use it – otherwise known as
techniques.
So as usual, I encourage you to keep learning
about your horse’s nature.
In his video, J.J. Rydberg reveals several
things about horses that are vital to understanding
their nature.
The cool thing is this.
J.J. is the horse training and management
teacher at his local college and he’s good at
teaching.
You can tell that from his video.
Anyway, he’s been around horses since he
was knee-high to a grasshopper and is one of the
few skilled at teaching.
If you want to read more about his video,

I just love the part in J.J.’s video where
he talks about making a horse mad.
He says you can make a horse so mad that
even if you were to whip him (which, of course,
you wouldn’t)…you couldn’t get him to do what
you want.
He’d be so mad, he wouldn’t care.
And here’s something J.J. reveals that
you must NEVER forget:
“If you’re mad,
your horse is
already mad.”
What’s the implication of that?
You won’t get anywhere with a mad
horse.
No where!
So if you ever wonder if your horse
is mad, look to yourself.
If you’re mad…chances are your horse
is too – in fact, he was mad before you were.
Then it’s time to cool him off.
(And yourself too).
Ok.. that’s it for today – stay safe around your horses!
