included below!

The Miss America pageant has a long
history in the U.S.

And you may be surprised to know a
horse was once used in the talent portion.

In 1949, Carol Fraser (Miss Montana),
rode a horse onto the stage to do an equine
routine.

After this performance, animal acts
were banned from the pageant.

Why?

Because the horse stumbled and nearly
landed in the orchestra pit.

No,…I am NOT making that up!

Can you imagine sitting in the orchestra
pit and seeing this 1000 pound animal
about to land on you and your violin?

Apparently, horses on a solid stage
is not a good thing.

But in the dirt…now that’s where
they can show their stuff.

Two of the coolest things a horse
does (in my humble opinion) are sliding stops
and spins.

And you don’t have to be a master
trainer to teach ’em.

But they are a wonderful way to better
yourself and your horse.

You’d be shocked how much you can hone
your communication skills with a horse just
by doing this.

And really, there are no tricks to
doing it.

Plus, not every horse can do this well.

Some are better ‘n others but it’s
still fun to do.

We filmed Chuck Nesmith showing how to
do this step-by-step.

It’s easier than you’d think – especially
using Chuck’s method.

Interestingly, there are things you
should know “behind the scenes” that are going on
before you horse can do these things.

One is, you want your horse to guide good.

When you move your hand, you want the
horse to move.  Everything you do with your hand
you also back up with your leg.

Next, the more you can get your horse to
guide, the more confident they become in what they’re
doing.

Do you know what makes a good reining horse
even if your horse isn’t a reiner?

Confidence.

Your horse not only needs it…so do you
as the rider.

Once Chuck has done his warm-ups and made
sure the horse can do a few things, he works on
stopping.

Chuck has 3 cues for stopping.

1. Saying “whoa”

2. Sit down and take away your legs.
(This is Chuck’s #1 cue.)

3. Picking his hand up.

And Chuck doesn’t like to use a fence to
teach a horse to stop.

Why?

He doesn’t think he can get anymore drive
from the backend by running them to the fence.

Chuck says it’s just not for him.

I find this rather refreshing because
here’s a guy doing it differently from lots of
other people AND he’s very successful with his
own way.

What is his own way?

Chuck trots his horse toward the rail.

If the horse ducks left or right he will
steer him back the other way.

When he gets up to the fence, he backs
the horse.

Why?

Because the same muscle group used in
stopping is being used in backing.

Then he turns them around easy.

You may wonder if Chuck works on roll
backs when teaching stopping.

He doesn’t.

Why?

Because they are two different maneuvers
and he doesn’t want his horse jumping around.

Thus, if you want to learn to teach your
horse good stopping (and sliding stops) and how
to spin, Chuck gives a remarkably thorough
explanation how to do it in his DVD.
