“How To Study The Beery Course In Horsemanship”
What follows is the original instructions send with the Beery 8 Volume Course on Horse Training:
——————-
First — Bear in mind that this is a Course of Lessons to be studied and not simply read.
Second — Read the first two books through carefully, in order to get a general idea of my methods for training colts and typing horses by their heads.
Third — After this careful reading, master the details of each lesson in Colt training so throoughly that you can name them without the book. Be prepared to know “what to do next” in each lesson, for when doing actual work you will not have time to refer to the books.
Fourth — Before beginning with a colt, learn how to tell a horses’s disposition, for it may be necessary to change some general plans to suit your colt’s case.
How to tell the disposition of any horse at sight is made clear to you in the second book of my complete Course.
Fifth — After mastering the lessons in Colt Training and the special book on Disposition, you may begin colt training. Do not under any circumstances begin to break a horse of a bad habit until you have thoroughly mastered the entire course.
Sixth — Even the smallest details of the lessons are important. My success as a colt and horse trainer depended upon a real knowledge of the subject. So will yours. So be sure to master the details as well as the general principles.
Seventh — When the instructions say “Caress” you must caress. If they say “Caress the lower part of the neck” it does not mean to caress the nose or any other part of the body. If there are no instructions to caress, do not caress. Do not use the whip or any other method of control unless instructed to do so, and then only in the manner instructed.
Eights — Bear in mind that all of my instructions are based upon my own personal experience with many thousands of horses. Therefore, if you carry out my instructions IN DETAIL you will succeed just as I have succeeded and as hundreds and thousands of my students have succeeded.
