“Want Brickwall Stops From Your Horse?”
Every now and then something someone says or does
leaves you speechless.
Such is the case with J.J. Rydberg and
some of his training wisdom.
Just reading the story about J.J.’s past experiences on
the web site is worth it, even if you don’t want the video!

How well does your horse stop?
Does he just slow down and eventually stop?
Does he stop at all?
The most important thing a horse
should know is how to stop.
Some argue the most important thing
a horse should know is how to move forward.
I understand that thinking but in my book,
the stop is the biggee because a good hearty
“whoa” can save your life.
If your horse isn’t very good at it,
then you’re just askin’ for trouble.
Here’s a good way to get a great stop.
After you get your horse to stop, do
this…
“Back him up
a couple steps!”
Why?
Because it cements in the horse’s mind
that he won’t be going forward.
Going forward is, of course, the opposite of stopping.
So when you teach him he “won’t” be going forward,
he eventually gets it in his mind.
This is exactly what J.J. Rydberg shows in his DVD.

Now, here’s an extra little secret I’ll hand you on a silver platter.
Remember a minute ago I said many believe that going forward is
the most important thing a horse should know?
Well…here’s one of the reasons.
- get your horse to go forward…
- keep him moving forward…
- get him where he wants to rest a little…
- and he will “WANT” to stop

A mistake many make is asking the horse to stop before
it’s occurred to the horse that he’d like to stop.
Work him first.
Be aware of his demeanor.
Soon you’ll see he wants to stop.
When you see it, then practice your stops.
Be careful not to nag him about this either.
No one, not even horses, like to be nagged.
Get a few good stops and then just ride him
around on a loose rein.
Let him have his face and teach him
that when you’re together that it’s not all work.
He does what you ask and you let him chill out.
