What’s Holding You Back?

Charlie from www.HorseTrainingResources.com here…

In Today’s Horse Tips Magazine Tip:

“What’s Holding You Back?”

I got a few folks a little mad at me yesterday
after they read my horse tip titled:

“It’s Time To Take Control and LEAD”

And a few unsubscribed because they didn’t
want to hear some truth and what I would call
“tough love”.  I just hope they see the light
before they and/or their horses get hurt.

My heart is for you and your horse to enjoy
each other.  But when folks are heading
down the wrong trail or don’t have a true
sense of reality, then I need to speak up
and tell it like it is.  I don’t apologize for
speaking truth and hope you feel the same.

There are lots of folks out there that won’t
do that because they’re too concerned about
what people think of them and then they
won’t buy their products.

I got news for these guys – they wouldn’t
anyway.  I won’t hide behind a false facade
just to make you feel good and then carry
the responsibility for you getting hurt
or not living up to your responsibility
as a horse owner and ultimately enjoying
your horses!  I gotta be able sleep at night!

Today’s tip is a little different.

I titled it “What’s Holding You Back?” because
I hear from folks all the time saying they
are frustrated, confused, emotionally hurt,
physically hurt or injured and a lot more.

After I read hundreds of letters and talk
to dozens of folks describing all kinds of
problems they are having with their horses,
I can get a pretty clear picture of what
issues folks have.  I see patterns and
and can quickly size up situations.

Don’t get me wrong.  Any experienced horse
trainer would tell you that there are some
horses that are more challenging than
others to train.

And some horses get it better than others.

However, what is frequently not considered or
even talked about by many, is the fact that
many horses have had BAD (wrong) training or
have been mishandled a lot.

MANY horses have been allowed to exhibit
bad habits, disrespect and other ills, only
worsening the situation.  The horse doesn’t
care – they will do what’s easiest for them
when there is a void of corrective action.

Please read that last paragraph
again and let it soak in.

Horses will take the path of least resistance
when where is no corrective action.  They don’t
care about how you feel if they have other
things in mind (food, water, safety, fleeing
pressure, etc.).  If they don’t respect
your space and your leadership they’ll
kick, bite, squeeze you in the stall,
step on you or worse.  Surprised?

These horses can be even worse since you
basically have to go all the way back to
the beginning like they’ve never been
trained before.  You have to undo all the
bad training and bad habits they already
have BEFORE you can go forward and succeed.

For some of you, especially if you haven’t
been around horses much yet, you may not
even recognize that.

So what is holding you back?  What type of
problems do you have and what will it
take to get you to the point where your
horse responds to you commands and cues and
ultimately respects your leadership?

May I suggest it starts with you?  It’s not
the horse – it’s your handling and training
of the horse that needs attention.

If you don’t have a real clear understanding
of how a horse thinks, learns and responds
then you would do no better than to start
there.

I am not suggesting at all that you don’t
have the DESIRE to do better.  And I know
everyone is is pulled by limited resources,
time, schedules, family, and more.

But we all have to come to the realization
that nothing will improve until we take
action to learn and apply proper training
techniques to horses that need correction.

It Starts With You

My goal is to help you learn and understand.
That’s why we exist as a company.

Somewhere beyond your desire, passion and interest
in your horses is your responsibility to do
what you need to do to train them properly,
teach good horse manners and learn how to
handle and ride safely.

Here’s a good start I would suggest. And it’s
been proven by thousands that have come before
you – so you don’t have to second-guess whether
it’s effective or not:

1. Get the Jesse Beery Course in Horse Training.
It’s solid, effective horse training and
handling that’s been proven.  It’s just as
valid today as when it was written years ago.

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com/beery/

We have the course available as printed books,
downloadable books, MP3 Audio Books, etc. to
match your budget and learning style.

2. Examine our professional training DVDs by
multiple, experienced (and wise) trainers.

I would suggest you look at Diana Quintana,
Sam Burrell, Brad Meyers, Paul Esh, and
Kenny Scott to start.  Then consider others
as you gain understanding and need more
specific help.

You can read about all our DVDs here:

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com/dvd/

3. If you want everything (including a lot more
books and audio books), all our DVDs (plus many
we don’t even sell yet), articles, etc. then
be sure to look at our online The Horse Library:

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com/TheHorseLibrary/

It’s THE most cost effective, feature-packed
online resource you can buy.  For the cost of
a single DVD per month, you can have access to
EVERYTHING on day one.  Duhhh….

OK?  So please don’t crucify the messenger.

Take action, get some understanding and then
work with your horses.  The knowledge you gain
today you will use the rest of your life, no matter
how many horses you own or handle.

Take care – please stay safe out there.

Blessings,

Charlie

It’s Time To Take Control and LEAD

In Today’s Horse Tips Magazine Tip:

“It’s Time To Take Control and LEAD”

Let me paint a picture of something I see
a lot in the horse world – especially those
who have only been around horses for a
few months or perhaps a couple years.

There are a lot of bad habits horses have
that their owners simply do nothing about.

It can put you in real danger and simply
ruin your horse experience and relationship
because you no longer enjoy your horses,
you are fearful, and in reality….

“your horse dream world is fading”

I am amazed at how many letters I get and
folks I meet that don’t know how to handle
situations like kicking, rearing, balking,
disrespectful, crowding your space, and a
lot, lot more!

Why would anyone let their horse get away
with these kinds of issues and not take
care of them IMMEDIATELY??

Seriously – are you letting your horse
buck, run off with you, continually spook,
or get away with other bad habits?

WHY?

I have some strong opinions and suspect
lots of things are going on.

One is obvious – lack of understanding how
to correct these issues or how a horse
sees you as a leader.  You may be your
own worst enemy.

I even know of some weak-knee’d trainers
who won’t take on some of these issues
because of a few reasons:

– they find it too difficult (yeah, it’s true)

– they know the owners won’t carry through
once the horse is fixed because they
treat their horses like puppies

– many horse owners don’t understand that
you have to be firm and persistent with
a horse and they will be criticized for
the training methods they use

Yeah – I said it.

Warning:
My next few comments will probably make
some of you mad at me.  You might think
I’m too harsh because you think every
horse problem can be cured with treats.

Well, I’ll tell ya folks, horses are not
puppy dogs and they don’t learn like
humans or have human emotions, either.

Sorry to bust your bubble but it’s true.

If you don’t agree with that then perhaps
you should stop reading and unsubscribe.

Many problems in the horse training and
handling world can’t be fixed with sweet
talk, treats and “hoping” the horse will
have a change of mind.

Many things take hard, persistent work
and a complete understanding of how to
fix problems through knowing how a horse learns.

You MUST understand the true nature of the horse.

You can’t bribe a horse with treats and
expect him to stop kicking or running off
while you’re on his back.  Sorry….

What does work?

Glad you asked….

Take a look at Diana Quintana’s horse training
DVD.  She’s a master at this:

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com//quintanatraining/

Then look at Brad Meyers and his “Little Things” DVD:

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com/dvds/meyers-little-things/

And check out the Diana Quintana “4-H Clinic” DVD we have
featured below.

Or a favorite of many by Paul Esh on teaching
your horse to “Respect Your Space”:

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com/dvds/paulesh-respect-space/

Folks – we have many more as well.  A whole list of
excellent, professional trainers that know their stuff and
WHO AREN’T AFRAID TO TACKLE DIFFICULT HORSE PROBLEMS!

I would also urge you to get and read the
Jesse Beery Course on Horse Training.  No other
single work has helped more horse owners
than this course.  And that’s a fact.

In fact, most successful horse trainers worth
their salt today cur their teeth on the
Jesse Beery Course.  You might be surprised
at how many use it today for their foundational
training program.  They might call it
something else but the base methods came from Beery.

Read more here:

http://www.horsetrainingresources.com/beery/

The professional trainers we feature are not
the “touchy-feely” type of trainers
you find other places.  They know their
stuff and teach it well to you.  Effective
methods you can use today.

Real, professional trainers.  Solving real horse
problems.  Using solid, effective, non-abusive
methods that work and will stick.

Isn’t that what you really want?

So DON’T put up with anything less than
a well-trained, respectful horse and keep
from putting yourself in danger.

Enjoy your horses and safe riding.  It’s so
much more fun and uplifting.

Make the decision to do something about
those problems you’ve been ignoring.

We’re here to help you with it all.

Charlie

Horse Training: Wood Frogs, Possibilities and Horses

“Wood Frogs, Possibilities and Horses”

In nature, there’s an amazing thing.

It’s the Wood frog.

It freezes solid in the winter and
thaws back to life in the spring.

That’s one of those things that make
you wonder how that’s even possible.

In fact, the horse world is full of
things that make you wonder how they’re poss-
bile.

If you ever watched a rider get a
horse doing things when it doesn’t look like
the rider is doing anything…that’s what I’m
talking about.

When we filmed Sarah Jarvis, she
showed how to do many of those things.

Click HERE For Your Sara Jarvis DVD

Sarah contends (and I agree) that
you don’t need to pull on a horse to get ’em
turning and stopping.

Horses don’t like to be pulled and
jerked on anyway.

So how do they know what to do when
you ask them?

It’s a process that teaches the horse
what to do when asked.

Most people don’t get that when you
ask a horse for something that they won’t do
it because they don’t know what you’re asking.

It is NOT (normally) because they’re
being belligerent.

So, you simply have to explain it to
them.

And you have to explain it in a way
they understand.

It has to be done often.

Once it’s been done again and again
and again, they start to get it pretty good
at it.

When Sarah shows how to teach a horse
to move off the slightest rein touch, she uses
a whip.

Fist, Sarah discusses the Direct and
Indirect Rein.

The Direct Rein is the rein used away
from the horse.  Look for the hip to move away
to follow the rein.

Eventually, once he moves from the rein,
the rein returns back to neutral which is about
an inch or inch and a half from his neck.

When you move the rein away, reinforce
it with the whip by tapping on the horse.

The horse moves himself back to where
the rein is back to neutral position.

Then if the horse moves forward instead,
use the halt position where you turn the other
way.  Elevate the lead rope, then ask for the
direct rein aid again.

Remember to ignore the negative and
reinforce the positive.

And as long it’s not life-threatening,
ignore it.

When you’ve taught this to your horse
something astonishing happens.

When you move your rein and get the
slightest contact on his neck, he moves his
head.

When I say slightest contact, I mean
as light as a fly touching him.

Horses can definitely feel that slight
contact.  In fact, there’s a layer of muscle
just below the skin designed to feel the slightest
touch.

Click HERE For Your Sara Jarvis DVD

And when he follows his head after he’s
moved it you get that special effect of the
horse moving as if he’s reading your mind.

This is something I think many a horse
owner should try on their horse.

Why?

It teaches you that you don’t have to
pull on the horse.

It teaches you just how sensitive to
touch a horse really is.

It teaches you patience.

And…it’s fun to have your horse respond
to your rein aids like this.

Plus, it’s pretty easy to do.

If you want to try it, check out what
Sarah shows.  Click on the following:

Click HERE For Your Sara Jarvis DVD

If done correctly, rein aids will
release themselves  – it’s not a conscious
thing.

You set the rein, the horse moves,
the rein gets its own release.

Mission accomplished.

OK – that’s it for today – stay safe around your horses!
