Newlywed Expectations and Horse Training

 “Newlywed Expectations and Horse Training”

Expectations, Pre-Conceived Notions and Ideas –
they can either confirm what you hoped or leave
you very dissallusioned!

Let me explain…

My wife and I provide pre-marriage counseling to couples
in our church.  We’ve been doing this for about 20 years
and have worked with dozens and dozens of couples.

We meet with each couple 6 to 7 times and thoroughly dive
into all issues relating to marriage, family planning,
raising children, finances, and a lot, lot more.

For most young couples, we cover things that they didn’t
have a clue about or think about.  It’s very eye opening
for them most of the time….  because –

“They’re in L O O O V E”

and don’t often see clearly through those rose-colored
glasses and raging hormones!

So… as you might expect, many times they have certain
expectations about how things are going to be, and
think they are immune to any problems that might
come up, etc.

They are setting themselves up for a rude awakening
unless we can help them become aware of seme of the
expectations they have.

They don’t see all the potential conflicts in likes,
dislikes, relatives, finances, time for each other,
and a hundred other things that is a result of
life situations and all that comes along!

Each one typically has certain expectations or has made
assumptions that don’t even come close to reality.

And, depending on how they were raised and through
past relationships, either of them may have a very
skewed idea of what a good marriage should or could be.

It’s really important for new couples to have a good,
solid understanding of what is ahead of them, what their
vows mean and be ready to learn what is necessary to
commit themselves to this new union.

Uhhh…Charlie – What’s This Have to Do With Horses??

Let me explain….

Just like we can find a mate and fall in love, many do that
with their horses, too.  We see those big eyes staring back
at us, see that majestic animal in the pen or out in the
pasture and immediately fall in love.  We start dreaming
of trail riding or showing or just wanting to be around
this new love and start a new relationship with this
new horse.  Some go ga-ga and don’t have a clue what
they’re getting into.

It happens every day to hundreds, if not thousands.  Then,
reality sets in and we have to start training or fixing
problems.  Perhaps that new love has some quirks – he bites,
kicks, rears or bucks.  He won’t come to you and you can’t
catch him in the pasture.  He won’t let you pick up his
feet or he won’t stand to let you groom him or put
on his saddle.

He won’t walk, turn or stop right.  You jerk, kick,
pull, scream and get frustrated.  Now the horse is even
more confused and doesn’t have a clue what you want
because you haven’t learned enough to know how to
get him to move properly.

Sound familiar to some of you?

Then the horse gets frustrated with you and all your
pulling and negative tone in your voice.

At some point he wants to get rid of all this
pressure (horses will push against or flee pressure).

And how does he do that?  By rearing or bucking
you off.  Or perhaps taking off on a run as you
hold on for dear life.

That’s his defensive action.  You don’t want to take
a horse to that point if you can help it!

Bad Horse?

What just happened is natural for the horse but your
lack of understanding and training sees this as
a “bad horse”.

Sound familiar?  Ever seen this before?

Are you living with some of those issues right now?

Sometimes we have to come to the realization that the
problem is with us, not the horse.  Gulp!

Take Right Actions – Learn The Truth:

Anything worth doing is worth doing right.  If you don’t
have control of your horse then you’re skirting danger.

I know this – a 1,000+ pound horse which has lightning-fast
reactions and enormous strength – is a time bomb waiting to
go off, even with a trained handler or rider.

Do me and yourself a favor right now – if you’re not
willing to learn how to handle that horse correctly
and safely, and train him so it’s safe to ride, then
please get rid of him.  Don’t put yourself and others
in harm’s way.  Statistics show that you’ll get hurt
and many times it will lead to broken bones,
concussions, or worse.

That may sound harsh but it happens way too often.
If I’m the first one to tell it to you that way and it
keeps you, others or even your horse from getting hurt,
then I’ll do it.

It’s sort of like the new couple who are blinded by love
and don’t see the train wreck coming in their lives.

What’s Your Next Action?

So what are you going to do about it?

May I suggest you look honestly at your situation
with your horse and make a plan to fix what’s broken?

If you need need training help then get it now.

The REAL Truth Is This:

A little bit of education can save you untold
heartache, frustration.  It keeps you from undue
harm that may come when your horse is out of
control.  It could save you from getting
that broken arm, neck, concussion, or worse.

Do You Know This Horse Training Secret?

“Do You Know This Horse Training Secret?”

Ever hear of Annie Oakley?

Annie was a female sharpshooter back
in the horse ‘n buggy days.

To prove her sharpshooting ability,
she once had 5,000 pennies tossed into
the air, one right after the other.

She hit…

       “4,777 of them!”

That’s an astounding 95.5%

Was she a natural?

Maybe.

But even a natural has to practice.

Doing something over and over can only
get you better at it.

The Secret of Repetition:

And that, my friend, is a BIG horse
training principle.

If you want your horse to do something,
it has to be explained to him…day after day.

At first, he won’t likely get it.

In fact, as he attempts to do what
you’re asking, it won’t be purty.

He may be a little clumsy doing it.

But you keep at it remembering that
you must explain it to your horse day
after day after day.

Don’t kick yourself if your horse doesn’t
master something right away.

It’s not your fault.  It’s normal.

He’ll get better and better as long
as the habit you’re teaching him is the
one you want him learning.

You Must Be Consistent:

That’s one place the consistency
factor comes in.

Consistently, you explain to horse
what you want him to do…day after day.

And you know what one of the best things
you should explain to your horse is?

Explaining to him how to move his
parts.

By parts I mean his body.

You see, if you divide your horse into
4 parts you would have the head and neck, the
shoulders, the barrel (rib cage), and the hindquarters.

Why divide them up like that?

Because you need a way to make it easiest for
the horse to understand what you’re asking him.

If you asked him to move all the parts
at once, he wouldn’t get it.

You and he would get frustrated and it
just wouldn’t work.

But start with a body part and just work on that
and you have a formula for success.

Now why do you want to teach him move
his body parts?

Because that’s how you get your horse
to move his whole body later.

Just think…

You touch your leg toward his flank
and immediately his hind end moves away. And that can
be done while you do a little neck reining.

You use your other leg and bump him
by the shoulder and moves his body around.

If you’ve ever ridden a horse that responds like
what I’m describing, you would settle for nothing less.

It’s exhilarating to ride (and own) a
horse that responds like that.

The Genius of Sam Burrell:

One of the best ways I’ve EVER seen
to teach this to a horse is using Sam Burrell’s

“How To Install An Operating System In Your Horse”

You can see more about it by clicking
on the following:

http://horsetrainingresources.com/dvd-samburrell.html

BTW – this DVD one of our customer’s favorites.

We constantly get excellent comments about
Sam’s methods and gentle way of teaching.

Even Sam would tell you that he went
for years training horses without knowing this.

And when he discovered it, everything
changed for him.

Sam told me when he discovered this he
remembered a saying from famous horseman
Ray Hunt who said:

“The first thing you need to know
is the last thing you’ll find out”

This may not be the absolute
first thing you should know,
but it’s definitely in the top 5.

If you have Sam’s DVD, I implore you
to watch it again and do this with your horse.

You will be shocked how responsive
your horse becomes.

He’ll listen better too.

Be more respectful.

And best of all, you’ll have more
fun with him and he’ll be so much safer.

If that’s not reason enough, I don’t know war else then
I don’t know what else you should do.

Don’t have Sam’s Operating System DVD yet?
Then I strongly urge you to get yours now…
I promise you, you will NOT be disappointed!

http://horsetrainingresources.com/dvd-samburrell.html

OK – that’s it for today.  Stay safe around your horses.

How Little Things = BIG Results!

“How Little Things = BIG Results”

Little Things Big Results There’s a saying I’ve used for years:

“Big Doors Swing On Little Hinges”

Tiny hinges can swing doors that are hundreds
of times their weight.  Let me tell you about
something I found amazing and witnessed for
myself…

Last year we were visiting some relatives in
Tennessee.  We stopped in Nashville to see
the full size replica of the Parthenon.

What was so impressive was the two sets of doors
(one on each end of the building).  Each set of
two doors were huge.  Each door was 24 feet high,
7 feet wide and one foot thick.  But get this:

They were made of bronze and EACH DOOR weighed…

    7.5 TONS!

Each of these doors swung only on their hinges
with no tracks.  And you could easily push them with
your fingertips.  It was simply amazing how little
hinges could support and move such large doors.

Great Charlie… What’s this have to do with horses?

Glad you asked!

Just like so many things in life, it’s the
attention to the “little things” that can
have a big effect.

A little bit of correction or training each
day can lead to a horse that is fun and a
joy to ride.  No fighting your horse.  No
blow ups under saddle.  No disrespect from
your horse…and on and on.

Small, incremental changes in working with
your horse leads to HUGE gains in so many
things including your confidence and your
horse’s confidence in you.

Brad Meyers is a long-time horseman and
trainer.  Folks love his teaching and methods
and continually remark on how effect his
training is for them.

We filmed Brad as he described many of

his training secrets.  The DVD is titled:

“The Little Things” and you’ll be impressed
with his knowledge, experience and manor.

Here’s a just a small list of things you’ll
learn watching Brad’s DVD:

Want to finally see improvement with your horse?
Tired of fighting you horse and getting frustrated
by the same old problems each time you ride or
work with him?

How long are you going to wait?  Until you or
your horse get hurt?  Until you hit the end
of your rope and threaten to sell your horse?

Help yourself and your horse now and start seeing
the turnaround within days.  Build that confidence
and rekindle that dream you have to ride peacefully
with your horse.

What does it take?  A little bit of action on
your part.  And the belief that things can
get better.

But it’s up to you at this point.  Nothing happens
