2. Horses Are “Into Pressure” Animals

Here’s what it means for us.

When your horse feels pressure he’ll have
a built-in tendency to push back.

If you’ve ever pushed on a horse and he
wouldn’t budge or he pushed back…this is why.

Just like it is natural for your horse
to eat, it is natural for him to push against
pressure.

Thus, he has to be taught to “yield” to
pressure.  Just this subtle yet powerful piece of
information often stops the frustrations of horse
owners.

Often, this is blown by an impatient horse
owner because this takes time to do and the horse
owner doesn’t understand that.

Let’s say you want to teach your horse
to yield to your leg pressure.

Do you get on the saddle and start with
your leg?

You can if you like a workout, can hold
your leg in a position for a l-o-n-g time and have
the patience of Job.

Instead, do it from the ground.  Every
thing taught from the ground transfers to the
saddle.  It may have to be refined…but it still
transfers.

Thus, if you start by teaching your horse
to move his forequarters to the right, start by
putting a little pressure on his left side.  Apply
pressure in the area just behind his left elbow.

If you’re still unsure, go ahead and put
the saddle on and get on him.  Put your left foot
forward a little.

Notice where you’re touching the horse when
you apply pressure.

That’s where you’ll apply the pressure from
the ground when teaching him.  You need to apply the
pressure in the same area from the ground as you will
from the saddle.

Otherwise, Mr. Horse won’t “get it.”

Same goes for applying pressure to move
his hindquarters, and so on.

Never, never, ever (did I say “never”?)
start teaching to move from pressure by applying
heavy pressure.

Always start with light pressure.  You
ultimately want your horse to move from light
pressure.

If you teach him to move from heavy pressure,
you will wear yourself out!!!!!

Teach him to move from light pressure.  Any
time you apply a few ounces of pressure from a leg
aid or a rein pull…you want Mr. Horse to react.

This takes time and patience to teach but
is crucial in horse training.

Also, when you apply pressure, try to make
the applicator of pressure as similar to the
aid as possible.

In other words, when you apply pressure with
your foot just behind his elbow, do your best to
replicate the aid.

And that means you’ll likely be using your
hand to replicate what your foot will feel like.  So
when using your hand to teach moving from pressure,
try to make it feel like what your foot will feel like
when the horse feels it.

Does that make sense?

One of the best examples I can think of
in showing this is from Sam Burrell.

Sam is one of our featured trainers.

He goes over this in a LOT of
detail and how to do it.

It’s Important To Be Strict With Your Horse!

“It’s Important To Be Strict With Your Horse!”

Have you hear the old saying:

“Look at a person’s kids
and you’ll know what their
horses are like?”

Here’s what it means.

Generally speaking, it refers to how well
the horse owner keeps their horses “in line”.

In other words, would you allow your
child to back-talk you?

No.

That being so, you wouldn’t allow your
horse to back-talk you.

But obviously, horse’s don’t speak.

So what is the equivalent of back
talk from a horse?

An example would be letting the horse
tell you what “he” is going to do.

Or, maybe nudges you with his nose
and pushes on you.

Those things are unacceptable and
should never be allowed.

Why?, you ask…

Because it’s a respect issue.

What’s important about respect?

This.

If you don’t have it, you better
not be riding your horse.

If your horse doesn’t follow your
leadership, then you aren’t the leader – the
horse is.

And if you’re out on the trail
confronted with a hazardous situation where
your life is in danger because you can’t control
your horse…your horse will do what “he” wants…

“Not What YOU want!”

Is that an important difference?

Dang right it is!

This is a partnership and you better be
the lead partner.

You better be the one who says when
he can leave when you take off the halter.

You better be the one who says he
can trot when it’s time to trot.

And so on.

Thus, you must practice being strict
with what you want from you horse.

There is no maybe.

There is no going left when you asked
him to go right.

Strict!

And if you don’t get it from him, put
the pressure on enough that you DO get it from
him.

Strict.

Bein’ strict isn’t being a bully.

And bein’ strict isn’t about abusing
your horse in any way – ever!

Bein’ strict is about your safety and
enjoyment of the horse.

You can be strict and loving at the
same time.  It’s a lot like parenting.

But that begs the question of:

“But how do you know what kinds of
things you should expect from your
horse?”

Great question – I’m glad I asked it. 🙂

You simply have to learn what’s appropriate
and what isn’t.  There’s lots to it.

But it’s something you can easily learn if
you don’t know.

One of the best examples I have “EVER” seen
is from Danie and Doug Hewlett.

Their DVD shows how to teach reining to a
horse.

If you want to read about it click the
following:

Even though they show you how to teach your
horse reining, there’s a lot of info about what you
should expect from your horse.

For instance, Doug Hewlett just hates it
when his horse is rude.

The second his horse gets rude, he corrects
him.

Because Doug understands the problem that
comes from a horse allowed to rude, he nips it in
the bud immediately.

As long as you’re fair and not letting your horse
be rude…you get far better results.

Ok.. that’s it for today.

Work with your horses – but please do it safely.

P.S. Basic training and teaching your horse good manners,
control, doing what you ask, etc. is the only way to
safely ride.

That’s one of the primary reasons we offer the famous
8 Volume Jesse Beery Illustrated Course in Horse Training.

If you need to train a colt, do basic training on your
horse or fix a whole bunch of problems, it’s all covered
in Beery’s books.

How To Get Your Horse Doing What You Want – Even When You Don’t Know How

“How To Get Your Horse Doing What You Want
Even When You Don’t Know How”

When I tell people you don’t “necessarily”
have to know horse training techniques…

“They scoff”

“Get real”…some of ’em say.

“You aren’t serious!??”,…others ask.

But…

“I’m totally serious!”

Sound crazy?

Think about this.

When you first started driving, did
you know how to do it?

No.

Did you have an idea?

Kind of.

Did you get better at it the more you
did it?

Hopefully. 🙂

You see, I’ve found that just about
anything you wanna do bad enough, you can do
even if you know nothing about it.

After all, all great things have
humble beginnings.

Nearly every trainer I’ve talked with
agrees with me on this point – which is this:

“Understand your horse’s nature and
you can get him to do about anything.”

Now…does that mean it doesn’t matter
if you know techniques?

That’s not what I said.

Knowing techniques “does” matter.

And you should always be adding
to your bag of tricks.

Techniques are invaluable to get a horse
to do something.

But what good is a technique if you
don’t know “WHY” it works?

A technique may work for a particular
instance but not for other instances.

The reason may be because of the “reason”
the technique works.

Here’s an example.

Say a horse bites at you.

Unless you understand your horse, you
may knock him in the head for doin’ it.

Sure it felt good to vindicate yourself
because he hurt you.

But you’re likely gonna make him head shy
if you knock him in the face much more.

Why?

Because when he sees your hand coming
towards his face, he’ll think he’s going to get
hit in the face.

That means, he’ll move his head away
from you.

Thus, when you go to pet him, perhaps
bridle or halter him…he won’t let you because
he thinks you’re gonna smack him.

Knowing that about horses, then you’re
not gonna smack him on the face.

But there are times you “may” have to
“spank” your horse and times you shouldn’t.

Understanding your horse’s nature will
help you understand what’s appropriate.

So what’s my point?

In his video, J.J. Rydberg says:

“Keep piddlin’ with your horse
to get him to do what you want.”

What J.J. means is to just keep at it.

When you get a try, call that a success
for the day and put him up until tomorrow.

It doesn’t have to be perfect.  In fact,
perfect doesn’t come without repetition.  Even
then, perfection isn’t going to happen.

You always work towards it, but you won’t
likely get perfection.

Just because you don’t know how to get
your horse doing something doesn’t mean you can’t.

After all, how do you think the techniques
passed along these hundreds (thousands?) of years
came about?

Horse’s never came with an Owner’s Manuals.

The horse trainers understood their horses
and from that understanding they were able to think
through what works and use it – otherwise known as
techniques.

So as usual, I encourage you to keep learning
about your horse’s nature.

In his video, J.J. Rydberg reveals several
things about horses that are vital to understanding
their nature.

The cool thing is this.

J.J. is the horse training and management
teacher at his local college and he’s good at
teaching.

You can tell that from his video.

Anyway, he’s been around horses since he
was knee-high to a grasshopper and is one of the
few skilled at teaching.

If you want to read more about his video,
click on the following:

I just love the part in J.J.’s video where
he talks about making a horse mad.

He says you can make a horse so mad that
even if you were to whip him (which, of course,
you wouldn’t)…you couldn’t get him to do what
you want.

He’d be so mad, he wouldn’t care.

And here’s something J.J. reveals that
you must NEVER forget:

“If you’re mad,
your horse is
already mad.”

What’s the implication of that?

You won’t get anywhere with a mad
horse.

No where!

So if you ever wonder if your horse
is mad, look to yourself.

If you’re mad…chances are your horse
is too – in fact, he was mad before you were.

Then it’s time to cool him off.
(And yourself too).
