Horse Training: Why You Need To Change Your Horse’s Mind

“Why You Need To Change Your Horse’s Mind”

Here’s Andy Curry discussing groundwork vs. changing your horse’s mind:

I don’t need to tell you that to
have a good horse to ride, you need good ground work on him first.

You need a system.

There are many a system out there.
What you choose to use is okay as long as you accomplish what
you’re after without hurting the horse.

Different trainers have different
ways.  Whatever works for you is what works.

Why do you want a good ground work system?

There are lots of reasons.

The reason I have in mind at this moment is:

“Change Your Horse’s Mind”

Good ground work has lots of effects on a horse.

One of the biggees is changing his mind.

You see, by directing your horse’s movement, you can change his mind.

These are the wise words from Sam Burrell, one of our featured trainers.

Sam is big on systems.

He likes to have a system for various
parts of his training.

Sam is famous for his:
“How To Install An Operating System In Your Horse – And You!”

But like Sam notes, before you can install the Operating System he
suggests, your horse must have good ground work in place.

Your horse should be halter broke and broke to ride before you
install his system in your horse.

If your horse has the good system of ground work installed,
you are on the right track with him.

What I mean is, because your ground work is sound you have the
ability to change your horse’s mind and keep him working with you.

To have control of your horse’s mind is to have control of his
nerves, muscles, and ultimately, his legs.

When you have that kind of control, you can do amazing things
with your horse.

Like what?

Like counter arcs where your horse bends his body one way and
walks the other.

You couldn’t teach your horse that kind of stuff if you couldn’t
change his mind in the first place.

When you want your horse to do neat stuff like counter arcs
and such, Sam recommends you start with the Rein Effects.

The rein effects are:

Direct Rein
Indirect Rein
Direct Rein of Opposition
Indirect Rein of Opposition

Assuming you’ve properly convinced your horse you can get him
doing what you like, you’d start with the Direct Rein.

The Direct Rein is a direct rein to the horse and you’ll be leading
him around just like you would from the ground.

You’ll take the direct rein about half way between your hip and your
horse’s eye (while you’re in the saddle of course).

Now this is “REALLY” important because
a green horse (or one needing re-training) can see your hand and
knows what it means.

Unless the horse knows what it means, he and you will struggle to
move on to the next thing.

And you shouldn’t move on to the next thing unless your horse “gets it”.

The Direct Rein is what you’ll use to teach lateral flexion.

That will get your horse soft to give when you want his head to come around.

But remember, your ground work must be in place before you go to this.

Now Sam’s video doesn’t show you ground work, but it DOES show how to
install and Operating System in your horse – and you.

Once your horse knows it (and it doesn’t take ‘that’ long to do –
and it’s not difficult to do)….then your horse will ride and guide like a dream.

One other thing I think you’ll love…

If you’ve ever rode a horse and you have his head pointing one
way but he’s going the other way….but you want him going the
way his head is pointed…wait’ll you hear Sam say why that is.

Sam says it’s “Energy goin’ out of that shoulder”.

Is it fixable?

Yep.  Sam shows you how.

And you’d be surprised how simple it is.

Horseback Riding: Riding Your Horse Like An Electric Eel

1. Riding Your Horse Like An Electric Eel

Here’s Trainer Andy Curry talking about riding:

It’s said:

“If you’re like an electric eel,
you might be a better rider for
your horse.”

Here’s what it means.

When electric eels meet, they actually
change frequencies.

Why?

So that their electrical fields
don’t interfere.

Isn’t that amazing?

The fact that they can just change
the frequency at will is amazing… or is it.

If the eel could talk, they’d say,
“Ahhh…no big deal.”

Funny thing is, the same goes for
an accomplished rider and/or trainer.

A rider who “really” gets it will
stay out of the horse’s way.

Like the electric eel, the accomplished
rider won’t interfere.

The rider’s done it so much and
learned special techniques that it’s become
second nature to them…just like the electric eel.

But to get accomplished, you first
must know the techniques and the
techniques must be sound.

And do you know what one of the
biggest mistakes riders make?

It is dropping their toes toward
the ground and wanting to hang on.

What’s wrong with that?

This seemingly “little” thing will
cause your body to rock forward.

If your horse stops on his front
end, you will shoot forward off
the saddle like a bottle rocket.

Plus, rocking forward puts the
horse out of balance.

It will be harder for him to do
maneuvers.

Think of it like this.

Have you ever had a kid ride on your
shoulders and he leaned forward.

Remember how hard it was to keep
your balance?

Remember how hard it was on you to
fight him leaning forward?

Think what that does to the horse?

Sure he’s strong, muscular, and powerful.

But it’s still hard on him. Plus, we
weigh a lot more than a little kid.

So the answer is pointing your heels
down.

That means your toes are up…not
down.

With your heels down, it practically
forces you to sit deep in your saddle.

It also practically forces you to
sit much more balanced.

But here’s a warning.

If you’re not used to doing this, you
may think you’re doing it when you’re actually not.

Thus, have someone watch your ride or
have someone film you so you can check your posture.

Did you ever see the movie “The Gladiator”?

Russel Crowe, the Gladiator, was asked
what he would tell his son if he were alive.

The Gladiator said,…

“I’d tell him when he rides
to keep his heels down.”

Although there are several things you
should know about riding and riding well,
this is one of the most important.

Then again, there are several important things to know.

If you know want to know some great
riding information, I urge you to look at two our DVD’s.

Both are on riding, but each show things the other does not.

Two Effective Horse Training Rules You Should Know

1. Two Effective Horse Training Rules You Should Know

2. What’s Your Highest Priority Training Problem?

*********************************************************

1. Two Effective Horse Training Rules You Should Know

Andy Curry discusses his interview with J.J. Rydberg:

It’s what breaks down the bond between you and your horse.

It’s called…

“Frustration”

Frustration leads to anger.

Anger makes the horse training thing
nearly impossible.

And the thing is, it’s not just anger
from you.

Your horse can get mad too.

Just cuz he’s a horse doesn’t mean he
won’t get miffed at you.

I’ve often thought if a horse could
speak English, he’d stop, look back at me and ask…

“What **BEEEEP!** are
you doin’ back there?!”

But since he can’t talk English, we
have to be aware of his language.

A swishing tail.

A bobbing head.

Ears.

And so on.

But here’s the thing.

When we filmed J.J. Rydberg he said:

“When you run into problems, go
back to the basics, soften up
on the way you ride him.  Forcing
him will make it worse.”

So…that’s Rule #1.

Soften up, go back to the basics, and
don’t try to force him because it’s akin
to dousing a fire with gasoline.

As an example, if you’re riding a
horse and you tap your leg on his shoulder
to ask him to move away from it…and he doesn’t…
then thumping him harder, faster,
and gettin’ mad will make it worse.

So think back to Rule #1: Soften
up, go back to the basics, and don’t try
to force him.

Think of it like this.

If you didn’t get what someone was
trying to tell you and they started smackin’
you…do you REALLY think you’d try to under-
stand what they’re trying to tell you?

Don’t know about you, but if I was
gettin’ thumped on and I didn’t know why and
it kept getting worse…I’d bite back.

Never mind about trying to do what
was being asked of me.

This is one of J.J.’s rules he reveals
in his DVD.  If you want to know more about
him, click on the following:

Get Your Own J.J. Rydberg DVD

His second rule is this.

If your horse is mad, just ride him
around.

It’s like letting off steam – or as
us humans call it…”venting”.

Just think to yourself, “I don’t need
to fight him.”

Besides, if you fight him, who do you
think is going to win?

You?

Or the 1200 pounds of bone, muscle,
and raw emotion?

2. What’s Your Highest Priority Training Problem?

If you’ve been around a while you know I keep asking this
same question.

You see, you need to figure out a plan for training your
horses.  Some things are just a nuisance and can be
taught as time permits.

But others are serious and dangerous.  Not handled
soon, you, your horse and others around you could
get hurt, maimed or even killed.

For example – do you loose control of your horse when you
head back to the barn?

Does he bolt on you and take off and you can’t control him?

That is very, very dangerous.

So here’s what you should do:

1. Do an honest evaluation of where you are with your training.

2. List everything wrong that needs attention.

3. List things you want to teach your horse for
showing, trail riding, jumping, etc.

4. Prioritize these, making sure you do the basics
first and then on down.

5. Make a plan, take the top priority issue first, then
train and handle that problem and….

Don’t Continue Until You Solve That Issue!

6. Take each remaining issue/problem and repeat.

OK??  A Simple, yet effective way to approach all the
issues with your horses.

Read below what Steve R. says:
===================================================

“Hello Charlie,

Just like to thank you for the opportunity to buy
Professor Beery’s training books. The information
and his years of experience he has put into it is
invaluable and so easy to put into action. I have
bought a 6 year old gelding that was an ex-pacer,
(disposition 2&4) and has lots of bad habits which
include chewing wood, bucking, bolting, shying  and
nipping.  Basically he was dangerous to ride.

After a month using Jesse’s methods I now have a
horse that is easy and pleasant to ride and is no
longer dangerous and unpredictable.  The other thing
that is great is you can make the training equipment
that he mentions and describes so easily and cheaply.

The only thing I bought was a surcingle. I also have
likely saved thousands of dollars for training this
horse myself instead of sending him to a
professional trainer.

I certainly will not be returning  this book, in fact,
a wild team of horses could not drag it from me.

As for those that think this book is outdated I can
only laugh at them, ha ha ha. I bet my horse will
be trained before theirs.

Thanks for sending me e-mail tips and I thank you
once again for this wonderful book.

All the best,

Steve Riddle”
