Is Your Horse ‘REALLY’ Halter Broke?

“Is Your Horse ‘REALLY’ Halter Broke?”
How To Tell…
Something a lot of people don’t get is the importance of a horse being halter broke.  When a horse is halter broke it doesn’t just mean you can lead him around.
There’s more to it than that.
What’s important about a horse being halter broke is the respect you “know” is there.
Sam Burrell, one of our favorites here, reveals how “broke” halter broke is.  Sam says:
“A test you should be able to do
with your horse if he’s broke is this…”
1. Lead on a loose rein
2. If you walk to his face, he should move out of the way.
3. If you walk towards hind end, he should move out of the way.
4. If you step and back up, the horse should too.
5. If you walk forward, your horse should too.
6. You should be able to do all this from either side of the horse.
…and if your horse won’t do it, then he’s not halter broke.
Simple.
Now then…why is this important?
It’s a respect thing.
You see, if you walk toward your horse’s head and he moves outta the way, then he’s aware of you.  He’s giving you space.  Not only is that a respect thing, it’s also (more importantly) a safety thing.
Actually…the respect thing is basically synonymous with safety.
There’s plenty more reasons why your horse should be halter broke – this is just an example.
Sam not only covers this point about halter broke, but also shows you something called,
“How To Install An Operating System In Your Horse”.
If you want to read about it, click on the following:
A point I want to add (that I and about every trainer I’ve talked with agree on), is that the halter and lead rope is a great place to gauge your  horse’s respect for you and your space.
So next time you’re leading your horse, try what I just told you. If your horse isn’t doing these things, get him doing them.  You will be shocked how much better he listens and how it transfers to other things you’ll be teaching him.
Good info…stay safe around your horses.
