Why Horse Training Isn’t All That ‘Purty’ + “Financial Hard Times”

1. Why Horse Training Isn’t All That ‘Purty’

A lot of people are blown away when
they see a horse do a nice spin, flying lead
changes, etc.

Fact is, that stuff is real purty.

But what isn’t purty is teaching it.  Some
even call it “ugly horse training.”

Training a horse, as fun and rewarding
as it is, is not usually all that purty.

When you’re teaching a horse something
new, they flat don’t know how to do it.

At the beginning stages, they’re
learning how to carry us.

That means their lopes, starts, stops,
and more will typically be rough – not perfect.

In fact, far from perfect.

Why is this?

Because they’re figuring out how to move
their hip and feet forward and keep their head
positioned.

If you think about it though, it makes
perfect sense.

It’s no different than us humans learning
to play an instrument.

The initial learning ain’t purty at all.

But, with practice and patience, slowly
it becomes beautiful.

Yet, we often forget that the horse has
to learn and practice too.

Too often, patience is lost with the
horse when a little understanding will show the
handler that the horse’s learning and perfecting
ability is similar to a human’s.

Plus, there’s another challenge that can
sneak up while training your horse to new things.

What is it?

The horse will go from listening to you to
losing attention on something else – just like a kid.

That’s pretty easy to solve.

Danie and Doug Hewlett reveal
their simple solution to this.

The solution?

Try to get them listening to you with the
least amount of pressure.

That could be a leg, a bump with the bit,
or you can get creative.

Just remember, when you lose your horse’s
attention it is NOT a major crime.

Therefore, it should not carry a huge
penalty.

A major crime would be kicking at you or
biting.

Losing attention only requires a simple,
“Hey!  I’m talking to you.”

Just the littlest thing to get his brain
back to you.

These are some of the words of wisdom spoken
by the Hewletts in their 2 disc set of DVD’s.

If you want to know more about them, click
the following:

One more thing.

Doug Hewlett points out how the horse
he rides gets a little rude now and then.

Often, riders don’t know their horse is
being rude and therefore don’t put a stop to it.

With no stop put to it, a problem grows
over time and you don’t even know where it came
from.

As a for instance, if you’re standing
next to your horse and he rubs his nose on you
and you move away from him….guess what just
happened in your horse’s mind?

He just learned he can move you around.

If that continues, he’ll learn to do
more of it.

The thing to do is to move him after he
nudges you.

That’ll send the message:  You are NOT
allowed to do that!

Problem is nipped in the bud and will
not continue as long as is handled in that
way.

Cool beans, huh?

2. Making Ends Meet During Hard Times

—–
WARNING: This is not horse related.  It is something
I have for all my readers as a special offering.
[Please feel free to skip past this section.]
—–

I normally wouldn’t even consider offering something like
this to a loyal readership of horse lovers.  Please hang in
there with me for just a minute….

Over the last 3 years, as I was getting our website
started and online, I have been introduced to lots
of other business owners who have been doing the
same thing.  Most were not in the horse
training or horseback riding market at all.

One of these friends ran across a series of books that
were perfect for today’s economic environment.  They are
a set of 6 books that cover the following subjects:

1. How to Prosper During Bad Times
2. Household Budgeting
3. Improving Your Credit Score
4. Getting Yourself Organized
5. The Secrets of Credit
6. How To Sell Your House Without an Agent

I looked at them and most of these have lots of excellent
ideas and wisdom.  The majority of the sections in each
are written very well.

I thought perhaps many on my horse training magazine
list might also find a lot of value in them – but only
if I could somehow arrange a deal to get them to you
at a very low price – like below $10.00.

So I contacted the publisher and explained my
situation and “negotiated aggressively” (some call
it arm twisting!).

My reasoning was this – if I can offer these at
a low enough price so that almost anyone could
afford them, then my hope is that LOTS of folks
would pick them up and benefit from them.

I guess we’ll see ’cause here’s the deal:

All 6 books are bundled together for a single price.

There are 3 prices

1. $7.77 – if you’ve never bought anything from us
before this is your price.

2. $5.00 – if you are a past customer who has purchased
anything – then this is your price.

3. Free – this is where my heart is on this.

If you are down and out and simply don’t have
two nickels to rub together, deep in debt or could
use these and can’t pay for them then contact me
and I’ll arrange for you to get these.  I’ve been there!

My hope is that enough folks will be able to spend
the $5.00 or $7.77 to cover my costs and perhaps
get these into the hands of others that need it.

I can offer these at this price as Adobe PDF downloads
only and have no plans to offer printed versions now
or in the future.

If you know of others that could use use these then
why not get a set for them to help them out?

If you, or someone you know, use only one or two
ideas or money-saving methods it could mean a huge difference.

Thanks for letting me bring this to your attention for
the benefit of many.

The Horse Training Secret Of The Bird Balancing on a Wire

“The Horse Training Secret Of The Bird Balancing on a Wire”

You’ve seen a bird perched on a wire
before, right?

He’s perfectly upright.

Not too far forward. Not too far back.

What would happen if he was too far
back or forward?

Obviously, he’d probably fall and have
to regain his balance.

But when he’s in balance, he’s sitting
there perfectly.  No wavering.  No straining.
No problem.

Now let’s take that analogy and apply
to our horse.

When your horse is in the bridle, you
want him balancing off it like the bird on the
wire does.

That means when your horse feels the
“slightest” pressure, he moves off it and
adjusts to where there is no pressure.

Just like the bird on the wire that
leans forward or backward to adjust its balance,
so does the horse in the bridle.

As you can imagine, the horse must be
well trained to be that sensitive to the pressure.

But OH!!!,…what a great horse to ride.

I love this analogy of the bird on the
wire.  But I gotta be honest and tell you…it’s
not my brain child.

Nope.

It came from Kenny Scott.

World Reining Champion

Kenny Scott is a Colorado horse trainer
who has won the world competition in reining.
Plus, he’s won so many other competitions that
he’s got trophy’s coming out of his ears.

The video is about controlling all four
corners of your horse.
Click HERE To Get Your Kenny Scott DVD
Kenny’s trained nearly all his life. Horse
training is all he knows.  And Man!…does he ever
know it!

When Kenny describes the bird on the wire
analogy, he’s really talking about collection.

I’ve talked about collection before.

Ultimately, collection is where your
horse is balanced, you have control because he’s
waiting to be told what to do, his hind legs
are under him doing the driving, his front legs
are light and responsive for turning, and so on.

Enjoy the full Kenny Scott video.  It’s one lesson
after another in training principles and golden
nuggets you can base your training on.

Horse Training: Horses and Rabbits?

“Horses and Rabbits?”

Did you know rabbits can see forward
and backward…

“at the same time!”

Tis true.

Horses are nearly as adept in their
sight as well.

In fact, given patience and training
you can get horses doin’ all kinds of cool things.

Most of us don’t aspire to get horses
doing things that take years of training.

But what we should all do it is install
an Operating System in horses.

What’s an Operating System?

An Operating System is basically the
ability to communicate to your horse how you
would like him to move his zones.

What do I mean by zones?

Well, you can divide your horse into
4 parts.

The head and neck.

The shoulders.

The rib cage.

And the hindquarters.

We’ll begin communicating how to move
starting out with the snaffle bit and our rein
effects.

And our aids of communication for the
horse come from our hands through the reins,
our seat (weight), and our legs.

Now here’s something you should know.

Sam Burrell shows this in his DVD.

When he did, he commented on how learning
this is what gave him breakthroughs in horse
training.

In fact, Ray Hunt said to him, “The first
thing you need to know is the last thing you’ll
find out.”

What Ray meant was “It’s too bad you
didn’t know this before because it would’ve made
a startling difference in you and horse’s ability
at first instead of years later.”

And now YOU know that this is something
you should know now.

Why?

Because you’ll kick yourself if you wait
to know it later.

So how does it work?

As an overview, you first need to
understand the rein effects.

Don’t worry, they’re easy.

The first is the direct rein.

This is a direct rein to the horse.

You’ll take it half way to your hip and
be able to just see the horse’s eye.  This is
very important.

On a green horse or one you’re retraining,
hold you hand out to the side more so your horse
can see it better and know what it means.

The direct rein is used to get lateral
flexion.  It’s also like a lead rope where you’d
lead the horse around just like you would from
the ground.

The next is the indirect rein. (aka: Neck Rein)

This has to be taught as a cue through repetition.

And here’s a little tidbit you should know.

It takes, roughly, 300-400 repetitions for
a horse to learn a cue.  And about 300-400 more to
get good at that cue.

Get Your Sam Burrell DVD HERE

Next is the Direct Rein of Opposition.

Here you take one rein straight back to
your hip.

Pulling both reins back directly opposes
the horse’s forward motion.

This isn’t used much…especially in the
beginning.

This is used mostly to flex at the poll
and for collection.

And you should know this is not effective
in controlling your horse.  It’s mostly for
communication and should be applied lightly.

Next is the indirect rein of opposition.

This is where you take the rein across the
saddle horn to your opposite shoulder.  Thus, pick
up the right rein and point it to the left shoulder.

Now as you get your horse to go through
“Zone” exercises, you’ll be using these Rein Effects.

For instance, Zone one is simply walking
in a circle.  You’ll use your inside rein and leg.

Walk about a 12 to 15′ circle.  Be able to
see the horse’s eye.  You don’t need to see the
whole eye.. just be able to see it.

You want your horse going in a circle like
a train does on a track – bent.

Your inside leg is full of life with
touches and releases and life in the hand.

Your outside leg is “Off”.

Use lots of soft touches and releases to
keep your horse going in a circle.

You must first teach this at a walk.

Once mastered in the walk, then you can
go to a trot and eventually the lope.

Eventually, your horse will flex toward
your leg.  If you touch the horse on the side
with your leg, he should look that way and bend
his rib cage away from your leg.

In a nutshell, that’s Zone one exercise.

There are several others, but you get the
idea.

following:

Remember what Ray Hunt said.

The first thing you need to know is the
last thing you find out.

If you don’t know how to do this, you
should make the effort to know now because you
will eliminate a LOT of frustration.
